Rosemary Hayes is the author of the Travellers series as well as Taken, written for our Raven imprint. She lives and works in England.

  • What were your influences or inspirations for writing?

As a child I was always making up stories but I never thought that one day I would become an author myself. It was years later, when I was grown up and living in Australia, that I decided to sign up for a creative writing course at Monash University.

  • What did you do before you became a writer?

I worked for Cambridge University Press and later ran my own small educational publishing company, Anglia Young Books, specialising in curriculum related historical fiction for primary schools. I am currently a reader for a well-known authors’ advisory service and also run creative writing workshops. I have had jobs in publishing, advertising and marketing.

  • What books have you written?

I have written the Travellers series, a group of books that not only resonate with young members of the travelling community, but also help gorger (non-gypsy) children to understand more about travellers and break down barriers through accessible, exciting, plot driven stories. Since my first book, I have written over forty books for children of all ages, from 5-yr-olds to teenagers, and worked with publishers both in Australia and in England.

  • Who are your books for?

These books are for children with an interest range of 9-13 years, so from Year 6 primary level. They could also be for older travelling children with poor literacy skills.

  • What other things have you been involved in?

I have been to the wonderful Charney Manor writers’ retreat in Oxfordshire. It is always such a shot in the arm to talk to other children’s writers, compare notes, join in the many activities and just generally be reinvigorated and re-inspired.

  • What else do you enjoy doing?

I’ve been lucky enough to travel all over the world but I love coming back to my home – and my animals – in rural Cambridgeshire. Animals have always been a part of my life and many of them have sneaked into my books! I enjoy reading, singing, listening to music, walking, sunbathing, eating and drinking with friends and family, gardening and visiting wild places. Oh, and chocolate!
